The Egyptian Intellectual Property Authority (EGIPA) has officially introduced a significant update to the patent examination process through Decree No. 26 of 2025, published in the Official Gazette No. 132 on 17 June 2025. The changes took effect as of 18 June 2025.
Under the new regulation, the official patent examination fee has increased from EGP 25,000 to EGP 50,000, effectively doubling the previous amount. This adjustment aligns with broader efforts to modernize and reinforce the efficiency of the national patent examination system.
One of the most notable changes also affects payment deadlines. Applicants are now required to settle both the examination fees and any applicable expert fees within three months of being notified. Previously, the deadline was six months from the patent filing date.
In specific cases—such as appeals where EGIPA seeks an expert opinion—expert fees will be levied. If applicants miss the new three-month deadline, their applications will be suspended until all outstanding amounts are paid, including any newly introduced extension and penalty fees.
This marks the first time Egypt has implemented extension fees for late payment of patent examination costs, signaling a more structured approach to managing procedural timelines.
Further clarifications and administrative guidelines are expected soon to support smooth implementation of these revised measures.
At Dagher Intellectual Property, we are closely monitoring these developments and are ready to guide our clients through the updated procedures to ensure full compliance and uninterrupted application progress.
